In pursuit of its primary mission, the United States Civil War Center has set as its primary goal for 1999 the creation of a separate page for each profession, occupation, and academic discipline to provide factual, exploratory, and speculative perspectives on the Civil War. The material you find on this page represents a beginning; whether modest or ambitious, it is only a beginning.
Purpose of the Interdisciplinary Project
From the Contributor:
These are my first preliminary questions and notes for a course and subsequently
for an article and/or book. I have not yet started research. What follows is
pretty much from memory of stored knowledge (risking a little inaccuracy) and
what I had time to set down. I welcome any and all suggestions. I asked Secretary
of State Madeline Allbright whether in her work she would benefit from having
a book, written somewhat in the manner of Machiavelli's The Prince, describing
Civil War per se, with examples from throughout history, worldwide. She replied,
enthusiastically, yes! Perhaps such a book would help leaders avoid Civil War,
or conduct it with better understanding of its nature, and emerge from it with
fewer long-term negative effects.
