The North Louisiana Civil War Round Table in Shreveport, Louisiana, has pledged to be the first participant in a large-scale Louisiana Soldiers Database project sponsored by the United States Civil War Center at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. The Round Table will donate funds to the Center for the purchase of National Archives microfilm records of the 27th Louisiana Infantry Regiment. The Center is working with the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War, in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, on a nationwide Civil War Soldiers Database. The Round Table's pledge makes Louisiana the first Southern state to participate.
Center On-site Advisory Board member Gary Joiner, faculty member at LSU in Shreveport, Assistant Director of the Red River Regional Studies Center at LSU in Shreveport, and member of the Round Table, is directing the project for the Center. LSU in Shreveport will be an active partner in this project through Regional Studies.
"This project will be the most comprehensive database of its kind ever attempted," said Gary Joiner. "We hope to have every Louisiana soldier from each side listed by 2011 as part of the larger Civil War Sesquicentennial commemoration. This is a unique opportunity for organizations and individuals to take an active role in preserving the legacy of our ancestors through sponsorship of a regiment."
Data entry for the database will take place simultaneously at LSU in Shreveport and the Civil War Center in Baton Rouge. Each roll of microfilm costs approximately $34, not including processing; on average there are 6 rolls of records per regiment. Donations for the purchase of regimental rolls and/or data entry costs are welcomed. Individuals and groups interested in sponsoring the project should contact the Center.
